Adobe Photoshop 7 using Wine on old PIII 600mhz

Okay, Firstly I`d like to thank everyone who left comments on my last post. I wasn`t sure how many people read this blog and I was beginning to wonder if even if they did whether it would be of any use. I`m glad people found it useful/interesting.

Following on from the last post I`d like to write a little something about my experience of running Photoshop 7 on this machine. Its a subject that I expect a number of people will be interested in.

A quick recap for those who don`t know, I recently purchased a 2nd hand (refurbished) Compaq Armada M300 PIII 600mhz ultra-portable notebook.

New/Old laptop

For me, one of the main reasons why I couldn`t switch to Linux was the lack of good graphic design software (I realize I just opened the floodgates to tons of angry comments!)
When i was finally in a position where I had a second computer which I no longer used for design I made the jump (see 1st post)

Now... I thought it was stupid to even consider running Wine and the available Adobe packages on an ancient laptop (I would have seriously thought twice about running them on Windows on this laptop)
But after I checked the system requirements for Illustrator 9 and realized that the pretty much exactly matched my spec, the curious geek came out in me and I HAD to give it a shot.

After installing Wine the first thing that surprised me was the speed at which it worked. I expected the performance to be really bad and couldn`t believe my eyes when the Adobe install wizard popped up almost as soon as I hit enter in the terminal.

Installation went without a hitch and in lightening quick time.

Now it was crunch time though, would it run?
I slapped the command into the terminal window and crossed my fingers... a few seconds passed and nothing had happened, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach... I tried the touchpad and the cursor didn`t move... the sinking continued. Was it just busy loading files or had it crashed?
a second later my cursor moved and a second or so after that I saw the dull grey background and the window border appear. I waited patiently as Photoshop loaded, only showing me the small white area which reports which stage it is at.

Finally after roughly 30 seconds the panels appeared and I was in...

Still feeling as synical and pessimistic as ever I navigated the mouse toward the file menu... No jerkiness in the cursors movement... I hovered over the menu, crossed my fingers and clicked...

Almost instantly the menu opened, (way quicker than Photoshop CS does on my Windows running Pentium4 2.8ghz machine) I quickly ran the cursor over the menus watching each sub-menu open instantaneously!... was i dreaming or was this actually working?!

After squealing a little and clapping my hands I decided that i should probably continue testing it. I started with a smallish image (72dpi roughly wallpaper sized - 1280x1024)
The file opened quickly and working with it seemed good. Most edits were carried out without any kind of pause or egg-timer cursor needed.
Saving the file was also pretty good, dialogue boxes opened quickly and the only part which really took time was writing the file to disk.

When working with much larger 300dpi images (especially where compression is used) is obviously a lot slower than this but it is still possible and doesn`t cause the application to crash.

I have now had Photoshop installed for over a fortnight and have been using it extensively for the last 7 days or so. I can happily say that it is perfectly capable of running on a system like this and if you only use an image editor for web graphics (low-res / low filesize images) then this could definately be used as your only image editor.

As far as Photohshop and Wine goes I think it is almost perfect. Although I have found one fault which involves the panels and toolbars. Sometimes (perhaps 1 in 4 times) when resizing the panels the computer locks up completely and requires you to ctrl+alt+backspace to force quit X and log back in.

This is obviously a big problem if you have unsaved work but can be avoided by ensuring that you have the panels set-up correctly before you start working.

The only other thing is that one of my most commonly used keyboard shortcuts has been left out (ctrl+right mouse) to zoom out with the magnifying glass tool. I have had to learn to use the ctrl+- instead.

To sum this post up i will point your attention to the picture below. Notice the attention to detail, the application name and logo in the task-list on my xfce-panel, and in the pager window too.

this really is a great job done by the Wine community! And I for one commend them all.
